A 45-year-old woman in Thai Binh was scammed out of 200 million VND after believing a "French man" who spoke fluent Vietnamese and promised to share 1.5 billion VND if she helped transfer money to pay the fee to "rescue" a suitcase containing 15 billion VND in cash that was "stuck at customs". A picture of a suitcase full of money and a person next to it dressed as a customs officer was sent to create trust. Despite warnings from relatives, the victim still borrowed money to transfer the money and lost everything.
The National Population Data Center (Ministry of Public Security) recommends that people follow the “6 NOs” to protect themselves:
Do not provide personal information to strangers
Do not make friends or chat with beautiful virtual accounts
Do not click on strange links, apps, or files
Do not believe that officials will call to request money for investigation
Do not transfer money or make deposits before verifying thoroughly
Do not dream of huge profits, easy jobs, high salaries falling from the sky
