How to change your Windows log-in password

Password is a secret string of characters self-set by user to authenticate accesses to resources such as computer, email, software, etc. Password exposed or stolen will lead to information security risks: account hijacked, personal profile leaked, etc. To avoid these risks, please consult the following notes:

  • The length of your password should be of at least 6 characters or more. 
  • Your password should be a combination of letters, numbers, special characters such as @, #, $ etc. and blank space " ".
  • Do not set password which is easy to guess such as name, phone number or birthday of yourself or your relatives.
  • Your password should not be a simple word (noun, verb, adjective etc.) which can be found in any dictionary of any language, for example: "car", "keyboard" etc.
  • You should change your password periodically, at least once per 6 months.

How to change your log-in password in Windows XP

To change your Windows XP log-in password, please take the following steps:

Step 1: Right click on My Computer icon, choose Manage.

Step 2: In Computer Management window, double-click on Local Users and Groups, then choose Users

Step 3: In the right pane of Computer Management window, right click on the account that you want to change password, then choose Set Password

Step 4: In the next window that appears, choose Proceed

Step 5: Enter your new password in New password box, then confirm it in Confirm password box and press OK

Step 6: Press OK to finish the process

How to change Windows Vista log-in password

To change your Windows Vista log-in password, please take the following steps:

Step 1: Right click on My Computer icon, then choose Manage

Step 2: In Computer Management window, double-click on Local Users and Groups, then choose Users

Step 3: In the right pane of Computer Management window, right click on the account that you want to change password, then choose Set Password

Step 4: In the next window that appears, choose Proceed

Step 5: Enter your new password in New password box, then confirm it in Confirm password box and click OK

Step 6: Click OK to finish the process

To change Windows 7 log-in password, please take the following steps:
